Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spanish defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £51.8 million.
The 27-year-old has signed a six-year contract with the Spanish giants, ending his four-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
The transfer includes an initial fee of £47.5 million, with a further £4.3 million in performance-related add-ons.
Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2022 and went on to make 163 appearances for the club. During his time in London, he helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Several top European clubs showed interest in signing the Spanish international, including Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City. However, Cucurella made it clear that his preferred destination was Real Madrid.
The defender is currently with the Spanish national team at the FIFA World Cup and is preparing for Spain’s opening Group H match against Cape Verde.
Chelsea paid tribute to Cucurella following the announcement of his departure.
“Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements. We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career,” the club said in a statement.
Cucurella becomes the latest addition to Real Madrid’s squad ahead of the new season. Incoming manager José Mourinho has already overseen the arrivals of Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva as the club continues to strengthen its team.
The move comes after Cucurella publicly questioned Chelsea’s transfer strategy and criticized the club’s decision to part ways with former manager Enzo Maresca earlier this year.
At Chelsea, Cucurella was not considered among the club’s untouchable players, a group reportedly led by Cole Palmer and captain Reece James.
His departure could open the door for Dutch defender Jorrel Hato to become Chelsea’s first-choice left-back next season, although the Blues may still look to strengthen the position before the transfer window closes.
Meanwhile, Cucurella’s move is not connected to ongoing speculation linking Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández with Real Madrid. Chelsea are believed to value the Argentine international at more than £120 million and remain reluctant to sell one of their key players.
For Real Madrid, the signing of Cucurella adds experience, versatility and depth to a squad aiming to challenge for major trophies in Spain and Europe next season.
