Morocco and Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz has shared a heartfelt message after missing a decisive penalty in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, as his nation suffered a 1–0 defeat to Senegal. The dramatic match in Rabat will be remembered not just for the result but for the controversy that surrounded it.

Díaz, who had been one of Morocco’s standout performers throughout the tournament, admitted on social media that his “soul hurts” following the miss that ultimately cost his country the title. He wrote that he had dreamed of lifting the trophy because of the unwavering support from fans and expressed how deeply the defeat has affected him.

Taking full responsibility, Díaz apologised from the bottom of his heart and acknowledged how difficult it will be to overcome his disappointment. Still, he vowed to continue fighting and repay the faith that fans showed in him throughout the competition.

The final itself was far from ordinary. After a controversial VAR decision awarded Morocco a late penalty, Senegal’s players briefly left the pitch in protest, delaying play. Senegal eventually prevailed in extra time thanks to a winning goal, leaving Moroccan supporters devastated.

In the wake of these events, Morocco’s football federation is reportedly considering legal action against Senegal, challenging the walk-off and its influence on the match’s outcome.
