The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) begins with hosts Morocco taking on Comoros in the opening match of the tournament. The game will be played on Sunday, 21 December 2025, as Africa’s biggest football competition kicks off in North Africa.

Morocco enter the tournament as one of the strong favourites to win the title. The Atlas Lions are aiming for their second AFCON trophy and their first since 1976. While Morocco have produced strong teams over the years, they have often struggled to go deep in the competition, last reaching the semi-finals in 2004. Playing at home, expectations are high, and anything less than a strong run will be seen as a disappointment.

Comoros are taking part in AFCON for only the second time in their history. The island nation joined CAF in 2004 and made a stunning debut at AFCON 2021, where they reached the knockout stages. Repeating that achievement would be another huge success for the Coelacanths, especially against a host nation in the opening match.

Match Details

The match between Morocco and Comoros will kick off at 20:00 CET (GMT+1) on Sunday, 21 December 2025. The game will be played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Team News

Morocco will rely on striker Youssef En-Nesyri to lead their attack. The forward has scored 25 goals in 85 appearances for his country and is expected to be supported by the energetic Ismael Saibari. Star full-back Achraf Hakimi is currently injured and will miss this match, but there is hope he could return later in the tournament.

For Comoros, much of the attacking threat will come from Myziane Maolida, while experienced midfielder Youssouf M’Changama will be key in guiding the team on and off the ball.

Head-to-Head Record

Morocco and Comoros have played each other four times in the past. Morocco have won three matches, while one game ended in a draw.

How to Watch AFCON 2025 Live

The Africa Cup of Nations 2025 will be shown live in over 30 countries worldwide. Broadcasters include SNRT in Morocco, Channel 4 in the UK, beIN Sports in the USA and MENA region, SuperSport in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Azam Sports in Tanzania, among many others.

Fans are advised to check their local listings for exact broadcast times and channels.

This opening match sets the tone for AFCON 2025, with Morocco looking to make a strong start at home and Comoros hoping to surprise once again on the continental stage.
